Welcome to the official website for the International Urban
Design Conference, held on the Gold Coast, Australia 6,7 & 8
September, 2007.
The Conference theme “Waves of Change – Cities at Crossroads”
challenged us all to examine our towns and cities and was considered
a huge success to all who attended.
Population growth and economic prosperity have consequences on the
environment and on the longer term social well-being of our
communities. |
The wave of
environmental challenges will affect communities through global warming and
likely sea level rises. The ability of urban centres world-wide to cope with
the impacts of high level fuel costs will also be examined. The physical
separation of home from work and recreation may need to be re-addressed in
city design.
>> Day one celebrated the official conference launch by the Honourable Rod
Welford MP, followed by challenging keynote addresses about global issues
confronting our cities and how best we can address these.
>> Day two was a whirlpool of presentations that took the macro view down to
micro insights into local and international research, design tools and
models that are leading the way towards sustainable urban habitats. At the
end of the day, was a great panel discussion hosted by Paul Barclay from ABC
Radio National’s “Australia Talks” program, focusing on the nature of
communities of the future.
>> Day three erupted with a hot debate moderated by Jennie Brockie on the
issues being faced by urban planners today, followed by more keynote
presentations that explored the ways and means of building capacity within
our communities, our future designers, and policy makers to implement the
necessary adaptations to our cities.
At the conclusion of the conference, the Gold Coast Commitment was
established to ensure that the best urban design practices, goodwill and
collegiality, and the momentum to instigate change would continue.
1. Rapid Urbanisation and climate change are inextricably linked.
2. This has adverse implications for people and the environment – at the
local, national, and international level.
3. This is an immediate challenge for everybody. Complacency is
unacceptable. A major change of approach is needed now.
4. The challenges are complex – but as a society we have the skills and
determination to achieve the necessary changes.
5. The will to act is critical. We are committed to act as groups and as
individuals, to influence political decision-making at all levels – in the
interests of all generations.
6. A mind set change is needed to see the city as “the stage for life” and
also that what each one of us does…matters.
We would like to thank all those who participated towards the success of
this conference and we would be pleased to hear your comments and feedback
via the Conference Survey. Please feel free to download speakers’ papers and
conference photographs available on this website, and stay tuned for more
updates on the next International Urban Design Conference.
