IUDC 2012 - Site visits

Northbank, Southbank and Federation Square, Central Melbourne
A guided walk and boat trip along the developing Northbank, the established Southbank and through the iconic Federation Square. This site visit will highlight new developments – a series of Northbank urban design and development projects that are revitalising the riverfront and linking Docklands with Spencer Street, South Wharf and Hamer Hall redevelopment in Southbank, and the multi facetted programming and activities that make Federation Square a highly valued contemporary civic place.

Dandenong Activities Area, City of Dandenong
A bus will depart for Dandenong (a 45 min journey) where a guided walk will showcase the changes taking place in the revitalisation of central Dandenong. The walk will pass by the newly redeveloped Dandenong Markets, and the shops and eateries that evidence the diversity of the multicultural community. The tour will highlight the art and place making projects in Palm Plaza and the laneways that Dandenong has become renowned for. A visit to Lonsdale Street will show the new lighting, traffic calming and innovative landscaping treatments, leading towards the eye catching new Government Services building nearby, and to the new bridge and art work opening to the new communities in the south. A city in an interesting phase of transition.

Melbourne CBD at Night
A guided walk through the little streets and laneways of the Melbourne CBD at night. This tour will highlight the innovative ways that lighting is being used to illuminate spaces, buildings and parks to create more intrigue, interest and safety in the city after dark.

Melbourne CBD Laneways
A guided meandering walk where you will meet some of the artists who have helped make Melbourne's laneways into 'canvases' for innovative and exciting art forms. Installation and graffiti art will be the emphasis of this walk with commentary on the fine grain diverse eating and drinking places that spill out into the laneways, creating a vibrant place for people to socialise.

Forrest Hill Precinct, City of Stonnington
A guided walk through the Forrest Hill urban renewal area where a high rise residential and employment precinct has been facilitated, replacing low scale warehouse and factories. The walk will highlight the vision of the Council and key developers in the precinct and how this has ultimately been delivered on the ground.
